Looking at the evolution of technology we notice a few trends: there are ideas that stay, ideas that recur, ideas that get recycled, and very rarely new ideas. Software architecture makes no exception. As an example, today's microservices are an extension of distributed object-oriented design favoured by advances in infrastructure automation.
Therefore, it's useful to analyze the styles of software architecture in order to gain a broad perspective and a strong foundation for designing the systems of today and be prepared for the systems of tomorrow.
In this talk, we will traverse and share insights on the most important styles of software architecture:
- data-centric vs. behavior centric
- monolith with its variants: big ball of mud, modular monolith, MVC, and hexagonal architecture
- distributed architecture with its variants: event driven, service-oriented, microservices, pipelines etc.
- and a few cross-model architectural ideas: event sourcing, CQRS etc. Finally, we will discuss a few generative principles for these architectural styles, and why your architecture needs to be unique.

Alex is a CTO, passionate polyglot programmer, senior trainer, and advisor at Mozaic Works. With over 20 years in software development, he has worked for various industries, and in various European countries, including UK, and USA.
He has been involved in large projects in many industries, including banking and financial services, energy, telecommunications, pharma, eHealth. From practical experience, he also advises and teaches on topics such as architecture and usable software design, evolutionary design, crafting code, clean code, secure coding, and refactoring legacy code with focus on design.
Alex also co-facilitated the first international code retreat outside US, in Bucharest in 2009. Since then, he’s facilitated tens of events such as coding dojos, architectural katas, code retreats, and others in many countries from Europe.
Alex enjoys helping teams and organisations to understand and build strategies for successful and robust products, built-in quality, and motivation.
